"The end of life is to be like God, and the soul following God will be like Him." - Socrates

Unknown God

An unfamiliar or unidentified god; (occasionally also) a god considered to be mysterious or beyond human understanding.

1. The Bible Scriptures:

– Let’s see what the Bible has to say about self-discipline / self-control John:

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.

Acts 17:16-17

  • Rustic deities – 78
  • Agricultural deities – 11
  • Health deities – 11
  • Sleep deities – 6
  • Other deities – 100
  • Deified mortals – 31
  • Heroes – 28
  • Notable Women – 32
  • Kings – 158
  • Seers/oracles – 22
  • Amazons – 23
  • Inmates of Tartarus – 4

"We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light." - Plato
  • So here Paul is waiting to Timothy and Silas to join him.
  • He was distressed by the 1570 gods the Arthenians had. (I am sure there is more)
  • How the heck do I know which one is right?
  • It seems like every important person claimed himself a god or deity.
  • So how can I make myself a god?
    • I do what I like and not what God likes. Eg. Sin.
    • I follow my own purposes and not God’s. I want to get rich and be famous.
    • I do not make disciples like Jesus did, who I claim to follow. I make believers that follow me not Jesus.
    • I live for my jobs and not for God. In terms of priority. My job comes first, then me and the God if I have time.
    • My personal relationships is more important than what God wants of me. Being in a relationship with a non disciple.
    • My preachers opinion is more important than what the Bible says. I don’t really knows what the Bible says therefore I follow what my preachers says.
    • I love my traditions more than what God’s word says. Eg. Infant baptism, praying through mother Mary, praying to the ancestors, …
    • I love my feelings more than what the Bible commands. Eg. If I feel like I do it no matter what the Bible says.
    • Watching TV is my idol and I just love lazyness.
    • Sports is my idol and my bodies image is more important than God.
  • So are you distressed by the idols in your life, like Paul was?

"The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing."

2. Close

John so are you a god or is God your God?

– It will show up in the free time you spend you life doing.

–  John can you please close us out in a prayer?
  • My pleasure, Francois.
  • Good Morning Father.
  • Thank you so much for loving me and wanting me to know the truth.
  • Help me to live a thankful life worshipping You and not myself.
  • I pray that I will follow you and make disciples like You commanded in the Bible (Mat 28:18-20)
  • Amen.
