Making Excuses – Seeking God No.1

"Ninety-nine persent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses" - George Washington Carver

57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

  • I am sure we all say to Jesus I will follow wherever He goes.
  • We all ask God in our prayers to lead us on the right path.
  • Jesus in essence say in v.58 that you will be homeless, will you still follow Jesus if you are a beggar with no security?
    • Are you willing to do this?
  • The next example Jesus uses, He calls the man to follow Him.
  • What does the man reply?
    • “Lord, first let me” – So his priorities are more important to him than what God’s priorities are.
    • In essence he say what he has to do is more important than God.
    • Can he really call Jesus his Lord if he’s priorities is more important than God? Nooo.
    • So what does call it when we put other things before Him?
      • Pride – “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth, I hate.”
      • So pride is evil.
      • Do you want to be evil in God’s eyes?
    • “first let me go bury my father”
      • Now it sounds like a reasonable request, doesn’t it!
      • I think Jesus tries to address the heart of the issue which is first me, then You Lord.
      • The question is after he has buried his father what other priority will he do?
      • He most probably will not come back to Jesus, it was just an clever excuse not to follow Jesus.
    • So what does Jesus want him to do instead of burying his father?
      • “but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God”
      • So, it is really about proclaiming the kingdom of God!
      • The question is, are you proclaiming the kingdom of God or are you making excuses to follow Jesus?
      • I don’t know if you are proclaiming the Kingdom of God but Jesus does and know if you are following Him.
      • It is really about pleasing God and not looking good before other people.
    • The next guy says, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”
      • Same as the previous guy he’s reply seems fair.
      • Jesus’ reply seems inconsiderate doesn’t it.
      • Is your family more important than God?
      • Does your family say like Jesus did, he is out of his mind. (Mark 3:21)
    • Jesus said, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
      • So in summary Jesus confirms how he feels about people making excuses and put their priorities before God.
      • So what happened to Lot’s wife, she looked back and became a pillar of salt. She died because she looked back.
      • How do you feel if people are picking teams who will play against each other and you get not picked until right at the end. Not good hey.
        • Jesus says if you make excused you are not fit for the service in God’s kingdom.
        • Do you want to be fit for God’s kingdom?
        • I heard on guy said that excuses is really lies you tell, to not obey God.
  • So what excuses are you making not to be wholehearted committed to God?
  • Do you think your excuses will get you into or out of heaven?

Prayer:

  • Morning God.
  • Thank you so much that you call me to be a disciple to follow You.
  • Help me that I will not be sentimental and make excuses or put anybody ahead of You.
  • Help me to resolve to follow You and be obedient to You by proclaiming Your kingdom.
  • I pray that I will be the man who puts my hand to the ploy and not look back that I will be fit for the service in the kingdom of God.
  • Amen.
