Save Yourself – Seeking God No.2

"You don't need someone to save you. Maybe what you need is someone to teach you how you are worth saving and show you how that is something only you can do for yourself" - RM Drake

Lets start with a story about a guy that needed to save himself.

The film stars James FrancoKate MaraAmber Tamblyn and Clémence Poésy. In the film, canyoneer Aron Ralston must find a way to escape after he gets trapped by a boulder in an isolated slot canyon in Bluejohn Canyon, southeastern Utah, in April 2003.

Aron literarily had to cut off his arm to rescue himself.

Let’s look at how you can rescue yourself and other people.

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

  • So the question this morning, how can I save myself?
  • Well, the Bible tells us there are two things:
    • My Life – How I live from day to day, my purpose, my drive, my destiny.
    • My Doctrine – What do I believe in, what people say or what God says.
  • There is anothe thing that I learn here:
    •  It says persevere in my life and doctrine, because if I do:
      • I will save myself – Why save myself because I live what I believe in.
      • I will save my hearers – If my life is base on what God’s will for my life is then surely I will spend it with Him.
  • So what does it mean to be diligent?
    • “having or showing care and conscientiousness in one’s work or duties”
    • If I am diligent in something it means I have goals and I am resolved in following them.
  • It also talk about giving yourself wholly to grow so that people will see your progress.
    • Wholly – “entirely; fully” – That means with all of your heart.
    • Progress – “forward or onward movement towards a destination” & “development towards an improved or more advanced condition” – That means you want to become someone badly enough that you would stick to it.

Practical:

  1. If you believe the Bible you have to read it every day! Have that Noble character God talks about (Acts 17:11)
  2. Find a friend who can teach you the Bible, we can all learn. You had to learn how to do your latest new job. Just be humble you know you don’t know it all. Even Paul the Apostle had to be taught by Annanias. (Acts 9:1-19)
  3. Learn to pray like Jesus disciples asked Him. (Luk 11:1)

Prayer:

  • Morning Father
  • Help me to be a man of conviction who really believes your words.
  • I know if I believe your words I will put them into practise.
  • I will watch the way I live if that will bring your glory.
  • I will make sure for myself that if what I believe, being taught by other people is really in the Bible.
  • Amen.
