Verse for Today:
“Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” – 1 Tim 4:16 NIV
Watch – To look or observe attentively or carefully; be closely observant. To stay awake at night while serving as a guard, sentinel, or watcher. To stay alert as a devotional or religious exercise.
Life – The interval of time between birth and death. The physical, mental, and spiritual experiences that constitute existence. A spiritual state regarded as a transcending of corporeal death. Relationships or activity in general. A specific, characteristic manner of existence.
Doctrine – A principle or body of principles presented for acceptance or belief, as by a religious, political, scientific, or philosophic group. A rule or principle of law. A statement of official government policy, especially in foreign affairs and military strategy.
So three words with their meanings. I find it refreshing to look at the dictionary. I would say what I know about the word is like a childrens color in book, the dictionary colors it in.
God calls me to watch my life & doctrine closely. So that means not just how I live but what I believe about God and the Bible. It says your. Now yours does not mean the group, your friends or your parents doctrine. If yours is pure it will save you and if you are saved your hearers will be as well.
There is always an “If you do”. It is like a diet, if you do it you will loose weight. If you have a fantasy and good intentions nothing will happen. It needs to be an resolve. I have this 28 day diet. Usually I keep on it for most of the week when I look at it and pack my lunch and eat my dinners. If I forget to look when I am in a rush, I normally wings it. But the proof of the pudding is in that scale and my weight app on my phone that I have to update to see my progress. It is like project management: input, output and feedback. If the feedback does not impact the input there is no improvement.
In the end the Bible says it is a salvation issue. A good illustration is your life and doctrine is like a planes two wings. If you loose any one of them your plane goes down. So they are equally important.
To make it practical; I keep a 10 point list on my phones home screen as a screensaver. I regularly look at it every day to remind myself what it is all about, otherwise I wing it like I do with the diet that will not bring the desired end result. In terms of feedback I have a excel spreadsheet that I get myself eather a one or a zero and it sums the ones to give me an average %. It is just an indication of how I was focussed the day. Cause evey day is like a tennis player who plays a point. It is either a winner or a lost point.
Prayer for today:
Dad, Father; You are the great I Am. You call us to be responsible for our lives and how we live them. Help me to watch my life and doctrine closely and to live by it. Help me to check myself daily to make sure I keep to my vision I want to accomplish. Amen
